三、阅读题(每小题 2分,共30分)
Passage 1
In order to learn a foreign language well, it is necessary to overcome the fear of making mistakes. If the primary goal of language use is communication then mistakes are secondary considerations that may be dealt with gradually as awareness of those mistakes increases. On the other hand, students should not ignore their mistakes. The language learner may observe how native speakers express themselves, and how native expressions differ from the way the learner might say them. For example, a Spanish speaker who has been saying “ I do it” to express willingness to do something in the immediate future, could, by interacting with native speakers of English, observe that native speakers actually say “I’ll do it”. The resulting discrepancy can serve as a basis for the student to modify his way of using the present tense in English. But a student who is unwilling to interact in the first place would lose this opportunity to learn by trial and error.
1. According to the passage, the present tense in English is _____.
A.     not used to express a desire to do something in the immediate future.
B.      used with some verbs but not with others to express future intention
C.      basically the same in English as it is in Spanish.
D.     not the most difficult problem for foreign students.
2. According to the passage, language learners can reduce the number of their
  mistakes by _______.
A.     asking native speakers for explanations.
B.      reading good books in the foreign language.
C.      comparing their speech with that of nati

ve speakers.
D.     speaking without regard to native speakers.
3. According to the passage, foreign language students who do not interact with native speakers will NOT ____.
A.     learn very much about the foreign culture.
B.      learn about the history of the foreign language.
C.      have to worry about making mistakes.
D.     take advantage of available language models.
4. According to the passage, foreign language students should not worry too much about making mistakes because _____ .
A.     native speakers like foreign students who try to learn their language.
B.      communication is the primary goal of language learning.
C.      native speakers will ignore their mistakes.
D.     everyone makes mistakes when trying to communicate in a strange language.
5. The author’s major conclusion about the function of mistakes in foreign language learning is that _____.
A.     mistakes are not important in the process of learning a language.
B.      learners are often very afraid of making mistakes.
making mistakes can help the learner discover the rules of the language.
C.      native speakers often do not tell foreign language learners about their mistakes.
Passage 2
In one way of thinking, failure is part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The “spider-story” is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider spinning a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times to span the gap. On the seventh time he made it and went on to spin his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone on to defeat the English… Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make a new type of battery when he had failed so often. He replied, “ Failure? I have no failures. Now I know 50,000 ways it won’t work.”
So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top form yourself? What can you change so things will go right next time?
Second, is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goal may be. Think about this question, “ If I do succeed in this, where will is get me?” This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyway.
The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life. Learn to “live with yourself” even though you may have failed. Remember, “You can’t win’em all”.
6. This passage deals with ____ .
   A. failure and success        B. two sides of failure
   C. the “spider story”.         D. the invention of light bulb.

A.     the value of failure     B. how people fail
C.  famous failures         D. how not to fail.
8. Robert Bruce was put in the passage to show that ____.
   A. failure must come before success    B. failure isn’t all bad
   C. nature will help us if we let it.  D. people who fail have plenty of company
9. One thing the writer does not tell you to do to cope with failure is ____ .
A.     check out your goals to see if they are right for you
B.      think about failure as part of life.
C.      Think about failure to find out what went wrong
D.     Avoid things that are beyond you.
10. Even if we have failed, we should ____ .
A. not think about it any more.             B. take it easy

Passage 3
Since 1840, every American president elected in the twentieth year一一 Harrison 1840, Lincoln 1860, Garfield 1880, McKinley 1900, Harding 1920, Roosevelt 1940, and Kennedy 1960一一 has died in office. Is this, as people often say, “ just a coincidence”?
There are very strong parallels between the careers of Presidents Lincoln and Kennedy. Lincoln was first elected to Congress in 1846, Kennedy in 1946. Both men had been in the armed forces. Each worked for the cause of civil rights. Both presidents were assassinated (暗杀). Lincoln was killed by a man born in 1839 and Kennedy by one born in 1939. Both assassins were Southerners who were killed before they could be tried.
The assassinations both occurred on Fridays, with the wives of the presidents present. Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy who told him not to go to the theatre. President Kennedy’s secretary, a Mrs. Lincoln, warned him against visiting Dallas, where he was shot.
Southerners named Johnson (Andrew, born in 1808 and Lyndon, born in 1908) succeeded both Lincoln and Kennedy.
With more digging, no doubt, more of these similarities could be found. Do people find coincidences where they look for them? Perhaps, at any rate, if John Kennedy had been aware of the similar details of Abraham Lincoln’s life, he might have listened to his secretary and cancelled his fateful Dallas trip.
11.    The best alternate title for this passage would be _____.
A.     American Presidents.              B. The Lincoln and Kennedy Assassinations

A.     saw the assassinations           B. were named Johnson
C. advised them not to go to the places where they were killed..

D. do not occur very often
